Pirang Forest (Gambia)

Weather…

Pirang Forest is a unique remnant of relict gallery forest located near Pirang village in the eastern part of the West Coast Region. Geographically, it constitutes an ecological island of high, closed-canopy forest surrounded by expansive mangrove swamps and savannah plains. This isolation has fostered the preservation of specialized flora and fauna that have become increasingly rare in other parts of the country. Historically, the area was also known for the adjacent Pirang Shrimp Farm, which is now defunct but historically influenced the local hydrology. The forest is renowned among ornithologists for its high density of rare avian species, such as the White-spotted Flufftail and various turacos. The vegetation is characterized by massive fig trees and oil palms that create a cool, shaded microclimate beneath the canopy. Due to its exceptional ecological status, Pirang Forest is a frequent site for international biological research. Its proximity to the Pirang salt pans further enhances the area's biodiversity, attracting numerous waders and waterbirds.
