St. Michael's Cathedral Rikitea (French Polynesia)

Weather…

The Cathedral of St. Michael in Rikitea is a remarkable architectural feat located on the remote island of Mangareva in the Gambier archipelago. Built between 1839 and 1841 under the supervision of Picpus missionaries Honoré Laval and François Caret, the cathedral stands as a testament to the missionary era's ambition. Its construction is unique, as it was built almost entirely from massive blocks of coral limestone quarried from the surrounding reefs and held together with coral lime mortar. Upon completion, its capacity for 1,200 worshipers far exceeded the island's entire population at the time. The interior is equally striking, featuring a high altar intricately decorated with shimmering mother-of-pearl inlays, reflecting the marine heritage of the South Pacific. Having undergone a significant restoration to preserve its brilliant white facade and precious ornamentation, it remains the largest historic church in Eastern Polynesia and a central landmark for those visiting this distant corner of the world.
