Monts Bakra

The Monts Bakra are a significant mountain range in the central-southern part of French Guiana, distinguished by their wild and inaccessible landscape. The peaks of this range reach altitudes of over 700 meters, forming a natural barrier in the midst of the dense tropical rainforest. Geologically, the mountains consist of granitic rocks, which are part of the crystalline basement of the Guiana Shield. The region is crisscrossed by numerous watercourses that have carved deep valleys into the relief, flowing into the major rivers of the region. Due to extreme remoteness, human presence in the Monts Bakra is minimal, making them a sanctuary for large mammals such as jaguars and tapirs. Botanically, the mountain range gives a vertical stratification of vegetation, from moist lowland forests to specialized ridge-top communities. Preserving this area is crucial for the ecological balance of the Guianese Amazon, as it serves as a major carbon sink and water reservoir.
