Wonji Sugar Plantation (Ethiopia)

Weather…

The Wonji Sugar Plantation is located in the Awash Valley of Ethiopia's Oromia Region, approximately 110 kilometers southeast of Addis Ababa. Established in 1954, it was the country's first modern sugar factory and plantation, marking the inception of the large-scale sugar industry in Ethiopia. Geographically, the estate benefits from its proximity to the Awash River, which provides the essential water resources for intensive irrigation of sugarcane crops. The valley's fertile alluvial soils enable high yields per hectare, supporting a robust production cycle. Over the decades, the facility has undergone continuous expansion and modernization to meet the rising domestic demand for sugar. The factory produces not only raw sugar but also molasses as a byproduct for industrial use. Wonji is a significant employer in the area and has stimulated the growth of several satellite towns around the industrial complex. Today, the Wonji-Shoa sugar factory remains a symbol of Ethiopia's early industrialization in the agricultural sector.
