Lavumisa lies in the very south of Eswatini in the Shiselweni District, right on the South African border, and is one of the country's most important border crossings. The town began as a railway post and quickly developed into a trading and logistics hub. Today hundreds of trucks pass through the Lavumisa-Golela border post every day, linking Eswatini directly with South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province and the port of Durban. Lavumisa is therefore regarded as a central artery of Eswatini's foreign trade, especially for sugar, pulp and consumer goods. The town lies in the dry Lowveld at around 200 meters elevation and experiences hot summers and mild winters. The region is shaped by mopane woodland, acacia savanna and low hills where wildlife such as kudus, impalas and warthogs can occasionally be spotted. Economically Lavumisa benefits not only from cross-border traffic but also from agricultural activities such as sugar cane and groundnut cultivation, as well as informal cross-border trade in foodstuffs, livestock and textiles. Investments in a solar power plant and a modern dry port have recently been planned to further expand the strategic role of the border post.
