Kubuta lies in the southern Shiselweni District, positioned between the fertile hills of the Middleveld and the first ridges of the Lubombo Plateau. The region has been shaped for centuries by traditional Swazi culture and hosts a series of important chieftaincies (umphakatsi), in which local royals exercise customary authority over land and livestock. Economically Kubuta is best known for its banana plantations, the fertile soils and warm, rainy summer climate allow several harvests per year. In addition, maize, sweet potatoes, groundnuts and tobacco are grown. Farmers often organize in small cooperatives that market their produce in Manzini and Mbabane. The nearby Mhlathuze River and several reservoirs enable small irrigation projects that have contributed in recent years to a diversification of agriculture. Socio-culturally Kubuta is known for its women's choirs, elaborate Sibhaca dances and the annual marula brewing season. The surrounding landscape of green hills, small waterfalls and acacia woodlands has a calm rural atmosphere and is popular with culturally-minded travelers who want to experience authentic Eswatini.
