Gabal Serbal (Egypt)

Weather…

Rising to an elevation of approximately 2,070 meters, Gabal Serbal is one of the most imposing mountains on the Sinai Peninsula, located in South Sinai overlooking Wadi Feiran. The mountain is composed of massive granite and is famous for its five distinct peaks, which give it a crown-like appearance. In early Christian tradition, some scholars identified Gabal Serbal as the true biblical Mount Sinai before the tradition became firmly associated with Gabal Musa. Numerous early Christian inscriptions and ruins of hermitages found in the mountain's caves testify to its significance as a religious center during Late Antiquity. The climb is demanding, passing through narrow gorges, but it provides some of the most spectacular views over southern Sinai and the Gulf of Suez. Wadi Feiran, situated at its base, is the largest oasis in Sinai and was once the seat of an early bishopric.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access to this prominent Sinai mountain typically begins near the Wadi Feiran oasis, where local guides can be hired for the highly challenging ascent. The approach involves driving on remote desert roads right to the main wadi entrance before hiking.
📅
Best season
The absolute best time to attempt the climb is during the cooler months, specifically from late autumn to early spring, to easily avoid the exhausting summer heat. Winter nights at higher elevations can be freezing, requiring strict cold-weather planning.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The climb is widely considered one of the most demanding in all of Sinai, featuring steep rocky paths, narrow gullies, and significant boulder scrambling. The rugged granite surface requires excellent physical condition and a reliable head for heights.
🎒
What to bring
Robust mountaineering or hiking boots, a large capacity water bladder, and a comprehensive first aid kit are completely mandatory. Warm layers, including a strong windproof jacket, are critically essential, especially if planning to camp or start before dawn.
🅿️
Parking
Vehicles are typically parked at designated spots within or near the Wadi Feiran settlement, under the somewhat loose supervision of local guides or residents. It effectively serves as the main base camp before beginning the actual long trek into the mountains.
⚠️
Safety
The sheer steepness and loose rocks present a highly constant risk of serious falls or severely sprained ankles during the entire climb. Hiring a very knowledgeable local guide is strictly crucial not only for complex route-finding but also for overall safety.
⏱️
Time needed
Scaling Gabal Serbal is a full, highly strenuous day trip, usually taking exactly 8 to 12 hours round trip entirely depending on personal fitness levels. Many travelers choose to camp in the wadi or on the mountain to smartly split the sheer exertion over two days.
