Gabal Abas (Egypt)

Weather…

Gabal Abas, frequently referred to as Gabal Abbas Basha, is an imposing peak in South Sinai reaching an elevation of approximately 2,383 meters. It is famous for the ruins of an unfinished palace that Abbas I, the Wali of Egypt, commissioned in the 1850s. Abbas I chose this high-altitude location for its cool, clean air to alleviate his respiratory issues, but construction halted permanently upon his death in 1854. The remains of massive stone walls still stand on the summit today, serving as a testament to the ruler's ambitious architectural vision. Climbing Gabal Abas gives hikers a more serene experience compared to the crowded Mount Sinai, providing spectacular views across the surrounding granite ranges. The trail winds through stark desert landscapes and passes near small Bedouin settlements, offering insight into the traditional local way of life. Due to its significant height, the summit often experiences a noticeably cooler climate than the lower desert valleys.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The remote region in the eastern Sinai typically requires a sturdy 4x4 vehicle to navigate the desert tracks. Being accompanied by a local Bedouin guide is highly recommended for safe navigation.
📅
Best season
The best travel times are the cooler months from late autumn to early spring, roughly October to April. In summer, the heat in the Sinai Desert reaches life-threatening temperatures, making tours unadvisable.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape consists of hilly, rugged terrain with stony slopes and deep wadis. The trails are mostly unmarked and demand good balance as well as experience walking off established routes.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy hiking boots with ankle support, a wide-brimmed hat, and high-SPF sunscreen are absolutely mandatory. You must carry all your own supplies, particularly an abundant amount of drinking water.
🅿️
Parking
As there are no formal parking facilities, vehicles are left at pre-arranged drop-off points in the desert. The exact location should be level ground and carefully chosen by the local guide.
⚠️
Safety
Extreme heat, dehydration, and losing your way are the greatest dangers in this inhospitable terrain. You should never set out alone, always carry a first-aid kit, and consider the lack of mobile signal.
⏱️
Time needed
Depending on the chosen route and physical fitness, explorations range from a half-day hike to a full-day desert expedition. An experienced guide helps in adapting the walking pace optimally.
