The Aswan High Dam is one of the most significant engineering feats of the 20th century, serving as a cornerstone of modern Egypt's economy. Built between 1960 and 1970 with Soviet assistance, the dam was designed to regulate the annual Nile floods and provide a consistent water supply for agriculture. The structure stands 111 meters high and spans 3,830 meters across the river. Its construction led to the creation of Lake Nasser, one of the world's largest man-made reservoirs, capable of holding up to 169 billion cubic meters of water. In addition to flood control, the dam generates massive amounts of hydroelectric power through its twelve turbines, which was vital for Egypt's industrialization. However, the project also necessitated the displacement of thousands of people and the relocation of historic monuments like Abu Simbel through an unprecedented UNESCO-led international effort.
