Day Forest (Djibouti)

Weather…

The Day Forest National Park is located in the Goda Mountains of Djibouti and represents one of the rare forested ecosystems in this predominantly arid country. The park extends to an elevation of up to 1,700 meters and is home to a unique flora, including the African juniper (Juniperus procera). This cloud forest is a critical refuge for biodiversity and hosts the Djibouti Spurfowl, a critically endangered bird species found nowhere else in the world. The microclimate in the mountains is significantly cooler and more humid than in the surrounding desert lowlands, enabling the survival of this relict flora. In recent decades, however, the forest has suffered heavily from droughts, overgrazing, and the dieback of juniper trees. Conservation efforts are focused on reforestation and protecting the remaining forest patches from illegal logging. For the local population, the forest is significant not only ecologically but also culturally as a spiritual retreat.
