Litoměřice is one of the oldest and most beautiful Czech towns, situated at the confluence of the Elbe and Ohře rivers in the Bohemian Central Uplands. A significant Slavic hillfort stood here as early as the 10th century; the settlement was granted royal town rights in 1219. The town has been the seat of a bishopric since 1655, which is reflected in the impressive number of ecclesiastical buildings, including St. Stephen's Cathedral on Cathedral Hill. The historical center is home to a blend of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture, with the Chalice Tower atop the Town Hall serving as a unique landmark. Due to the mild climate of the surrounding area, which favors fruit and wine growing, Litoměřice is often called the 'Garden of Bohemia'. Every year, the major horticultural fair 'Zahrada Čech' is held here. Nearby lies the former fortress town of Terezín, which is closely associated with the tragic history of the 20th century.
