Salamis (Cyprus)

Weather…

Salamis was the capital of Cyprus for over a millennium and is now one of the most significant archaeological sites in the northern part of the island. The ancient city is located directly on the coast north of Famagusta and was founded, according to legend, by Teucer after the Trojan War. Salamis experienced its golden age under Roman rule, as evidenced by the impressive gymnasium with its Corinthian columns and the large theater that once seated 15,000 spectators. Within the city area, there are remains of Roman baths with complex hypocaust heating systems as well as early Christian basilicas, such as that of Saint Epiphanius. Following devastating earthquakes in the 4th century and subsequent Arab raids in the 7th century, the city was eventually abandoned. The inhabitants relocated to Famagusta, with many stones from Salamis being used as building materials for the new city. Today, the excavations provide a fascinating insight into urban life and the monumental architecture of the Roman and Byzantine eras.
