Plaza de la Cultura (Costa Rica)

Weather…

The Plaza de la Cultura in the heart of San José is the spirited center of the capital's social and cultural life. Built in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the plaza is characterized by an innovative architectural concept: its main attractions are located underground. Directly beneath the plaza's pavement lie the Central Bank Museums, including the world-famous Gold Museum, which houses one of the largest collections of pre-Columbian gold artifacts in the Americas. Above ground, the Plaza directly borders the magnificent National Theater, Costa Rica's architectural jewel. The square serves as a meeting point for locals and tourists alike and is often the setting for street performers, musicians, and public gatherings. Its design provides an unobstructed view of the National Theater and creates an open space within the densely built downtown area. In 1996, the Plaza underwent renovation to modernize its structure and solidify its status as a modern cultural landmark.
