Puntarenas Pier (Costa Rica)

Weather…

The Puntarenas Pier (Muelle de Puntarenas) is a historical landmark on Costa Rica's Pacific coast and served for decades as the country's most vital gateway for global trade. The current pier was modernized in the 1920s to handle the increasing exports of coffee, known as the 'golden bean,' to Europe and North America. The city of Puntarenas flourished as an economic hub because of this port, where sailors, merchants, and travelers converged. The pier's architecture reflects the functional port design of the early 20th century, with the railway line running directly to the dock to expedite the movement of goods. With the rise of larger container ships and the construction of the modern Port of Caldera, the old pier lost its industrial prominence. Today, it serves primarily as a docking point for cruise ships and as a popular spot for strolls along the Paseo de los Turistas, offering spectacular sunset views over the Gulf of Nicoya.
