Cocos Island (Isla del Coco) is a remote, uninhabited marine jewel located approximately 550 kilometers off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site and a National Park, it is widely considered one of the top scuba diving destinations on the planet. Its isolation and pristine environment have created an oasis for spectacular pelagic marine life, drawing advanced divers from around the world. The island's underwater topography features rocky pinnacles and steep drop-offs that act as cleaning stations for large marine predators. Divers frequently encounter massive schools of scalloped hammerhead sharks, as well as tiger sharks, manta rays, whale sharks, and vast bait balls. Above water, the island is covered in dense tropical rainforest and cascading waterfalls, often drawing comparisons to Jurassic Park. Access to Cocos Island is strictly regulated and only possible via liveaboard dive boats departing from Puntarenas, with the crossing taking about 36 hours. The best time for diving is during the rainy season.
