La Casona of Santa Rosa (Costa Rica)

Weather…

La Casona of Santa Rosa is the preeminent symbol of Costa Rican resistance and national identity. This historic ranch house was the site of the Battle of Santa Rosa in 1856, where Costa Rican forces repelled a filibuster invasion. The building, a classic example of colonial architecture with wide corridors and thick walls, originally served as the main house of a vast cattle hacienda. Following a tragic arson attack in 2001, the structure was faithfully reconstructed using traditional techniques and materials to preserve its historical value. Today, La Casona houses a museum documenting the history of the National Campaign and the ecological significance of the surrounding tropical dry forest. The adjacent gardens and monuments honor the heroes of 1856, most notably Juan Santamaría. It serves as the heart of Santa Rosa National Park and is an essential visit for history-minded travelers.
