Atiu Bird Sanctuary (Cook Islands)

Weather…

The Atiu Bird Sanctuary, located on the island traditionally known as 'Enuamanu' (Island of Birds), is a premier destination for biodiversity in the Cook Islands. The sanctuary's most famous inhabitant is the Atiu Swiftlet, locally known as the Kopeka, a remarkable bird endemic to the island. The Kopeka is one of the few bird species in the world that uses echolocation, emitting distinct clicking sounds to navigate through the pitch-black limestone caves where it nests. The island's terrain is dominated by 'Makatea', a jagged ring of ancient uplifted coral fossils covered in dense rainforest, providing a fortress-like habitat for numerous avian species. Community-led conservation efforts have been instrumental in protecting this delicate environment, including the successful reintroduction of the rare Rarotonga Flycatcher. Visitors can embark on guided expeditions to the Anatakitaki Cave, where they can witness the unique behavior of the Kopeka amidst dramatic stalactites, experiencing a world where ancient Polynesian traditions and modern ecology work together to preserve a unique natural heritage.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best time to observe the Kopeka bird is during the breeding season from November to March. In other months the birds are still present, but chances of seeing them in the caves are lower.
🌅
Best time of day
Kopekas leave the caves at dusk to feed, so late afternoon is the best time. In the morning they return - you can watch them flying back in.
📜
Etiquette
Enter the caves only with a guide to avoid disturbing the nesting birds. Use flashlights sparingly as bright light can irritate the birds.
🎒
What to bring
A red-light flashlight is convenient for viewing birds in dark caves without disturbing them. Sturdy footwear and a head covering are recommended due to low cave ceilings.
🧭
Getting there
Atiu Island is reachable by plane from Rarotonga; the sanctuary is inland and visited with a guide. The caves are accessible via forest hiking trails.
🦌
What to expect
Kopekas are nocturnal cave dwellers and can be hard to spot during the day. Patient waiting inside the cave with dim light increases the chance of seeing them.
