Pico Cristóbal Colón

Pico Cristóbal Colón is the highest mountain in Colombia, with an estimated elevation of 5,700 meters, and is a prominent peak of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. This mountain range is the highest coastal range in the world, with its summits located just 42 kilometers from the Caribbean coast. Named after Christopher Columbus, the peak forms a twin pair with the neighboring Pico Simón Bolívar, which is nearly identical in height. Due to its extreme topographic prominence, it is ranked as one of the most prominent mountains globally. The summit area is permanently glaciated, although these ice masses have receded significantly in recent decades due to climate change. The area holds sacred significance for the local indigenous groups, such as the Arhuaco and Kogui, who view it as the center of the world. Access to the mountain is strictly regulated to protect both the fragile alpine ecosystems and the cultural heritage of the native inhabitants.
