Santa Luzia (Cape Verde)

Weather…

Santa Luzia is the only uninhabited island in the Cape Verde archipelago, situated between São Vicente and São Nicolau. Covering an area of approximately 35 square kilometers, it is a barren, desert-like island characterized by rugged volcanic formations. Its highest peak, Monte Grande, reaches an elevation of only 395 meters. Historically, the island was briefly inhabited in the 18th and 19th centuries by shepherds, but the lack of permanent water sources led to the ultimate abandonment of all settlement attempts. Since 1990, the island, together with the nearby islets of Ilhéu Branco and Ilhéu Raso, has been under strict environmental protection. It serves as a sanctuary for rare species, including the Cape Verde giant skink, which was once thought to be extinct. The coastlines of Santa Luzia provide critical nesting grounds for seabirds and sea turtles. The absence of permanent human presence has preserved a delicate ecosystem that is now closely monitored by scientists. Visitors require special permits to set foot on the island, ensuring the preservation of its biological integrity. Geologically, Santa Luzia is among the oldest parts of the archipelago, as evidenced by its heavily eroded landscape.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
As an uninhabited nature reserve, access is strictly regulated and generally requires booking an authorized boat charter from neighboring São Vicente. There are no regular passenger ferries, making visits an exclusive day trip.
📅
Best season
The dry months between August and December are often favored for smoother boat crossings and observing marine wildlife. Winds can be particularly strong from January to April, occasionally preventing safe sea travel.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The island's landscape is exceptionally arid and stark, featuring vast empty beaches, rolling sand dunes, and low rocky hills. There are no paved paths, meaning all exploration happens across loose, sandy or stony natural ground.
🎒
What to bring
Complete self-sufficiency is mandatory. Visitors must bring absolutely all necessities, including abundant drinking water, sun protection, sturdy walking shoes, and food, as the island has zero facilities or shade.
🅿️
Parking
No vehicles operate on this protected island. Any parking needs are handled at the port of departure on São Vicente before embarking on the chartered vessel for the crossing.
⚠️
Safety
The primary hazards are extreme sun exposure, dehydration, and potential isolation. Always travel with an experienced guide, ensure your boat operator is reliable, and strictly follow conservation rules regarding nesting areas.
⏱️
Time needed
Trips are strictly limited to daytime excursions. A typical visit spans four to six hours exploring the pristine beaches and immediate interior before the mandatory return boat journey before sunset.
