Selada do Flamengo Wind Farm (Cape Verde)

Weather…

The Selada do Flamengo Wind Farm is situated in the mountainous hinterland of São Vicente Island and stands as one of the most efficient renewable energy facilities in Cape Verde. As part of the Cabeólica network, this farm harnesses the exceptionally strong and consistent wind currents enhanced by the funneling effect between the island's peaks. The site features 7 Vestas V52 wind turbines with a total capacity of 5.95 megawatts, feeding directly into Mindelo's local power grid. Since its commissioning in 2011, the farm has played a key role in stabilizing the energy supply on São Vicente and helps mitigate high energy costs for the island's residents. The project was registered under the United Nations Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and measurably contributes to achieving national climate targets. Integrating this wind farm required complex infrastructural adjustments in grid management by the state utility Electra to balance the variable power input. Selada do Flamengo remains a symbol of technological progress and ecological responsibility within the archipelago.
