The Rabil Lagoon bird watching area on Boa Vista is an ecological gem and one of the most important wetlands in the Cape Verdean archipelago. The lagoon forms at the mouth of the Ribeira do Rabil, the island's largest riverbed, where freshwater meets the sea. This unique mixing zone provides a well-suited habitat for a variety of migratory birds and native species, including the rare Cape Verde warbler and the Iago sparrow. The area is classified as an Important Bird Area (IBA) and is under special protection to preserve sensitive nesting grounds. Visitors can often spot flamingos, spoonbills, and various plover species searching for food in the muddy shoreline zones. The surrounding dune landscapes and sparse vegetation also provide shelter for desert birds like the cream-colored courser. The lagoon plays a crucial role in the local ecosystem by acting as a filter and promoting biodiversity in an otherwise very arid region. Guided eco-tours provide information on the importance of preserving these water resources. For nature photographers and ornithologists, Rabil Lagoon provides unparalleled opportunities to document rare bird species in a spectacular landscape between the desert and the ocean.
