Estância de Baixo is a small, pleasant village located in the western part of Boa Vista island, near the former capital of Rabil. The settlement lies on a relatively flat plain, surrounded by the semi-desert landscape characteristic of the island. Historically, the inhabitants have relied on agriculture and livestock farming, with goat herding playing a central role in local life. The village is noted for its quiet, authentic atmosphere, standing in contrast to the mass tourism of the large resorts. The architecture consists mainly of single-story, brightly painted stone houses, often decorated with colorful doors and windows. Sparse date palms and acacia trees dot the surrounding area, providing patches of green in the dry terrain. Its proximity to the airport and the capital Sal Rei makes Estância de Baixo easily accessible, yet it remains a place of peace and tradition where the original Cape Verdean way of life is still very much present.
