Waza Bird Watching (Cameroon)

Weather…

Waza National Park in northern Cameroon is one of the most significant protected areas in West and Central Africa and a premier destination for bird watching. Established in 1934 as a game reserve and declared a national park in 1968, it covers approximately 1,700 square kilometers of diverse savannah and wetland habitats. More than 370 bird species have been documented here, including rare species such as the Black Crowned Crane, Marabou Stork, and various vultures. During the dry season, thousands of waterbirds congregate around the remaining waterholes, offering spectacular opportunities for observation. The park is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and plays a vital role in protecting migratory birds traveling across the Sahara. Beyond its avian life, Waza is famous for its populations of giraffes and elephants inhabiting the vast plains of the Logone-et-Chari department. Despite climatic challenges, the park remains an indispensable ecological hub for the entire Lake Chad region.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The dry season from November to April is convenient for bird watching, as many migratory birds are present and the vegetation is less dense. The rainy season from May to October hampers visibility and restricts access.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning hours are the best time to experience the highest bird activity, especially song and foraging. Late afternoon also sees birds active before they head to their roosting sites.
📜
Etiquette
Stay on the designated trails and avoid sudden movements or loud noises to prevent disturbing the birds. Feeding birds is prohibited as it alters their natural foraging behavior.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars with at least 8x magnification are essential for identifying birds in the trees. Lightweight, comfortable clothing and a field guide to the region's bird species are highly recommended.
🧭
Getting there
The area is located near Waza National Park and is accessible by road from Maroua, typically requiring a 4x4 vehicle. A permit from the park may be necessary; check in advance.
🦌
What to expect
Bird watching requires patience, as many species are well camouflaged or hidden in the vegetation. Take your time and settle in a quiet spot to let the birds become accustomed to your presence.
