Kousséri sits at the northernmost tip of Cameroon on the Logone River, directly opposite the Chadian capital N'Djamena, and with about 90 000 inhabitants is the country's most important Sahelian border gateway. A bridge connects the two cities, turning Kousséri into a busy transport and trading node for cattle, millet, rice from the Yaéré floodplain, dried fish and cosmetics. Its population blends Kotoko, Arab Choa, Kanuri and Fulbe communities, making it a multicultural Sahelian centre. The dry months are dominated by dusty harmattan winds, while the rainy season from July to September floods the nearby Logone wetlands and creates handy conditions for rice and sorghum farming. Highlights include the Kotoko sultan's palace, the historic Marché Mil and the ancient trade routes that once linked Bornu and Bagirmi caravans.
