Kigwena Forest Reserve

The Kigwena Forest Nature Reserve is located in southwestern Burundi, near the shores of Lake Tanganyika in the Rumonge Province. Covering an area of approximately 500 hectares, it represents one of the few remaining lowland tropical forests in the country. Established in 1954, the reserve aims to protect the unique flora and fauna of the region, which is heavily influenced by the lake's proximity. The vegetation consists of dense, evergreen forest with tall trees, lianas, and a rich undergrowth of ferns and mosses. Faunally, the forest is known for its populations of baboons, red-tailed monkeys, and a wide variety of reptiles, including pythons and cobras. Due to its location, the forest serves as an important biological corridor and buffer zone for the local ecosystem. Despite its small size, the reserve hosts numerous endemic plant species adapted to the humid lacustrine climate. The area faces ongoing pressure from agricultural expansion but remains a key site for biodiversity conservation in Burundi.
