Alcântara (Brazil)

Weather…

Alcântara, located across the bay from São Luís in Maranhão, is often called "the city that fell asleep" due to its remarkable preservation of the past. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it was one of the wealthiest cities in Brazil, its economy driven by cotton and sugar exports produced by enslaved labor. After the decline of the plantation economy, the city's progress halted, leaving its colonial heritage virtually untouched. Today, Alcântara is famous for its hauntingly beautiful ruins, particularly those of the Matriz de São Matias church in the main square. The grand mansions once owned by the aristocracy are often adorned with valuable Portuguese tiles (azulejos) that reflect the former wealth of the region. The entire urban ensemble has been protected as a national monument since 1948. The town is also known for the "Festa do Divino Espírito Santo," one of Brazil's most traditional and colorful religious festivals. Interestingly, the historic site neighbors Brazil's primary space launch center, creating a sharp contrast between colonial ruins and modern aerospace technology.
