Zenica is the fourth-largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, situated approximately 70 kilometers north of Sarajevo in the fertile valley of the Bosna River. The city is globally recognized as a major industrial hub, being home to one of Southeast Europe's largest steelworks, established in 1892 during the Austro-Hungarian period. Historically, the area has been inhabited since Roman times, evidenced by the archaeological remains of the ancient settlement Bistua Nova found in the Bilmišće suburb. During the Middle Ages, Zenica served as a significant political seat for Bosnian rulers, particularly during the reign of Ban Kulin in the 12th century. The city's geography is characterized by the surrounding rugged mountains, with peaks like Lisac and Vepar defining its scenic backdrop. Despite its industrial reputation, Zenica maintains a spirited cultural scene with the National Theatre and the City Museum serving as key institutions for the Zenica-Doboj Canton.
