Maglaj Fortress
Maglaj Fortress is one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Bosnia and Herzegovina, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Bosna River. Its origins likely date back to the 13th century, with subsequent expansions and reinforcements carried out by both Ottoman and Austrian forces over the centuries. The complex consists of an upper fortress with massive towers and a lower fortress, strategically designed to control river traffic and trade routes along the Bosna Valley. Within its walls lie the remains of barracks, ammunition stores, and a small mosque, reflecting the site's varied religious history. During the Middle Ages, Maglaj was an important seat for Bosnian nobility and played a crucial role in the 15th-century wars against the Ottoman Empire. Today, the fortress serves as a cultural monument and gives visitors a sweeping view of the historic old town and the surrounding mountains. It annually hosts cultural events that celebrate the region's heritage.
