Vranduk Fortress
Vranduk Fortress is situated about 10 kilometers north of Zenica on a strategic cliff overlooking the Bosna River, standing as one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in the country. The fortress was first mentioned in historical documents on March 11, 1410, during the height of the Bosnian Kingdom. Throughout the 15th century, Vranduk served as one of the residences for Bosnian kings, including Stjepan Ostoja and Tvrtko II, and functioned as a crucial administrative and military hub. Its architecture features a prominent keep (main tower) and formidable defensive walls designed to control movement through the Bosna River valley. Following the Ottoman conquest in 1463, the fortress maintained its military significance and underwent several expansions and modifications. Inside the walls, a small mosque was constructed on the foundation of a former Christian church, symbolizing the region's complex cultural history. Today, the site operates as a museum showcasing medieval artifacts and traditional lifestyle exhibits. Declared a national monument in 2004, Vranduk continues to attract history enthusiasts and hosts cultural events that celebrate Bosnia's medieval heritage.
