Pliva Lakes (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

The Pliva Lakes are located near the historic town of Jajce and consist of the Great and Small Pliva Lakes, formed by the natural flow of the Pliva River. The river eventually reaches the center of Jajce, where it plunges into the Vrbas River in a spectacular 22-meter high waterfall. A globally unique feature of the lakes is the "Mlinčići" complex, a group of about 20 small wooden watermills built on travertine barriers during the Ottoman period. These mills were historically used for grinding grain and now serve as an important cultural and historical monument representing traditional regional architecture. Due to the water's specific density and calm surface, the lakes provide well-suited conditions for water sports, having hosted the first Kayak-Canoe World Championships in 1963. The surrounding area is characterized by lush forests and scenic walking paths, making it a favorite spot for fishing, boating, and picnics. The integration of traditional craftsmanship with the impressive karst landscape makes Pliva Lakes a standout destination in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The site remains a protected heritage area, carefully managed to preserve both its ecological and historical value.
