Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary is located in northeastern Bhutan, covering an area of 1,520 square kilometers. Established in 1998, it is especially significant as a wintering ground for the globally threatened black-necked crane. Every year from November to February, hundreds of these rare birds winter in the wetlands of the Bumdeling valley. The sanctuary stretches from low, subtropical areas to alpine regions and glaciers on the border with China (Tibet). This altitudinal diversity leads to a rich biodiversity. The sanctuary is home to animal species such as the snow leopard, Bengal tiger, and red panda. Bumdeling is also an important cultural hub. It includes the Bumdeling valley and the remote village of Singye Dzong, a major pilgrimage site associated with the Buddhist master Guru Rinpoche. The area has been proposed as a potential UNESCO World Heritage site.

Getting there
This sanctuary in northeastern Bhutan is typically accessed via the regional town of Trashi Yangtse, where guided tours usually begin. It is highly advisable to organize your travel along the main roads well in advance.
Best season
The best travel months are typically late autumn and early winter, as this is when the rare black-necked crane population can be observed. The drier months also offer much more stable road conditions for exploring the area.
Terrain & paths
The terrain consists largely of hilly and sometimes steep paths, which require a reasonable level of basic physical fitness. Trails vary in difficulty, but often lead through dense and challenging natural landscapes.
What to bring
Sturdy hiking boots with excellent grip are absolutely essential for the uneven and sometimes slippery trails in this remote region. Visitors should also bring warm clothing for chilly evenings and binoculars for birdwatching.
Parking
Parking facilities directly at the sanctuary are often very limited or non-existent, so vehicles are usually left in the nearby town. It is best to inquire in advance at your accommodation about safe and secure parking locations.
Safety
Due to the extreme remoteness, it is crucial to always stay on designated trails and ideally travel with an experienced local guide. Emergency medical care is usually not available in the immediate vicinity of the sanctuary.
Time needed
A visit to this expansive natural area usually requires at least a full day to truly enjoy the rich birdlife in peace. However, many travelers plan for multiple days to accommodate longer trekking tours and deeper exploration.
