The Bumthang Valley, often described as the spiritual heartland of Bhutan, is a vast region composed of four main valleys: Chokhor, Tang, Ura, and Chumey. It is situated at an altitude ranging from 2,600 to 4,500 meters. The region is rich in ancient temples and sacred sites associated with Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) and the treasure revealer Pema Lingpa. Important monasteries include Jambay Lhakhang, built in the 7th century, and Kurjey Lhakhang, where a body print of Guru Rinpoche is said to be preserved on a rock. Bumthang is also known for its agricultural products, particularly buckwheat, dairy products like cheese and butter, as well as honey and apples. The landscape is a pretty mix of gentle hills, wide fields, and coniferous forests. Jakar Dzong, the 'Fortress of the White Bird,' presides over the Chokhor valley and is the administrative center of the region.

Reaching the tranquil region usually involves a spectacularly scenic but lengthy drive along the winding national highway, typically arranged seamlessly through an officially licensed Bhutanese tour operator.
