Jakar Dzong
Jakar Dzong, famously known as the 'Castle of the White Bird,' overlooks the scenic Chamkhar valley in Bumthang. It was originally founded in 1549 by Ngagi Wangchuck after a white bird was seen alighting on the hill, an event interpreted as a highly auspicious omen for establishing a fortress. The current structure was expanded in 1667 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to secure strategic control over eastern Bhutan. The dzong is distinguished by its exceptionally long central tower (Utse), which rises prominently above the surrounding defensive walls. A unique architectural feature is the protected water supply system, consisting of a walled corridor that allowed defenders to reach a spring during sieges. Today, Jakar Dzong functions as the administrative headquarters for Bumthang District and houses a resident monastic community. Its courtyards host various religious festivals and ceremonies that illustrate the deep bond between the local population and Buddhist traditions. The fortress remains a symbol of the spiritual and political endurance of the Bumthang region.
