Deveaux Plantation (Bahamas)

Weather…

The Deveaux Plantation on Cat Island is a prominent historical ruin site that once belonged to Colonel Andrew Deveaux, a Loyalist officer during the American Revolutionary War. Deveaux gained fame for recapturing Nassau from Spanish forces in 1783, for which he was granted significant land on Cat Island. The plantation's manor house was constructed in the late 18th century in the Georgian style and served as the administrative center of a vast cotton estate, primarily producing the high-quality Sea Island cotton. The ruins encompass the two-story Great House, slave quarters, and various outbuildings, all built using indigenous limestone. Following the abolition of slavery in 1834, the plantation economy collapsed, leading to the gradual decay of the estate. Today, the standing walls in Port Howe offer a poignant look into the Loyalist era and the socio-economic history of Bahamian plantation life.
