Bight of Acklins (Bahamas)

Weather…

The Bight of Acklins is a vast, shallow marine embayment in the southern Bahamas, nearly encircled by the islands of Acklins, Crooked Island, and Long Cay. Covering over 1,000 square kilometers, it constitutes one of the largest protected lagoons in the archipelago. Water depths within the bight are exceptionally shallow, often less than six feet (two meters), creating a handy habitat for bonefish and establishing the region as a premier global destination for fly-fishing. Geologically, the bight is part of an isolated carbonate platform, separated from neighboring banks by deep oceanic trenches. The pristine seagrass meadows inside the lagoon support robust populations of sea turtles and diverse marine invertebrates. Historically, the area's remote location and complex shallows provided sanctuary for pirates and later for Loyalists following the American Revolutionary War. The region remains sparsely populated today, ensuring that its natural environment remains largely in a primitive state.
