Somuncurá Plateau (Argentina)

Weather…

The Meseta de Somuncurá is a huge and enigmatic geographical unit located in northern Patagonia, shared between the provinces of Río Negro and Chubut. This high-altitude basaltic plateau, which rises abruptly above the steppe, is an isolated universe characterized by temporary lagoons, volcanic rocks, and caves. Somuncurá is considered a 'biological island,' hosting endemic species found nowhere else in the world, such as the Somuncurá frog and the naked mojarra fish. The landscape is one of extreme austerity, with relentless winds and complete silence, making it a place of great spiritual importance for the Tehuelche and Mapuche indigenous peoples. The Natural Reserve protects this fragile environment, which remains one of the least explored and most mysterious regions of Argentina.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Reaching this vast and remote Patagonian plateau generally requires a robust 4x4 vehicle and considerable off-road driving experience, with access routes typically branching out from provincial towns like Valcheta or Los Menucos.
📅
Best season
The handy visiting window falls during the Southern Hemisphere's late spring and summer (November to March), bypassing the severe winter conditions and freezing temperatures that make the plateau intensely inhospitable and often impassable.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The environment is defined by an expansive, undulating plain of volcanic basalt, scattered with shallow lagoons and rocky outcrops, offering starkly beautiful but extremely isolated and rugged cross-country conditions.
🎒
What to bring
Absolute self-sufficiency is required; carry redundant spare tires, comprehensive mechanical tools, extra fuel, cold-weather camping equipment, emergency communication devices, and abundant water supplies to survive in the wilderness.
🅿️
Parking
There are no formal parking areas; visitors simply establish remote wilderness camps on suitable, flat volcanic ground, ensuring vehicles remain safely parked away from muddy lagoon edges or unstable rock falls.
⚠️
Safety
This is an extreme environment demanding serious respect; isolation is the primary hazard, meaning any vehicle breakdown or medical incident can rapidly become critical without specialized wilderness guidance and satellite communication gear.
⏱️
Time needed
Expeditions usually last several days, with a minimum of two to three nights of wilderness camping required to meaningfully penetrate the interior of the plateau and adequately explore its unique geological formations and wildlife.
