Capanda Dam (Angola)

Weather…

The Capanda Dam in Malanje Province is one of the most significant symbols of Angola's post-civil war industrial rebirth. The structure impounds the Kwanza River, the country's most voluminous river, primarily for hydroelectric power generation. With an installed capacity of 520 megawatts, the station provides a substantial portion of the electricity for the capital, Luanda, and the central provinces. Construction originally began in the 1980s with Soviet assistance but was repeatedly interrupted by the armed conflict, only reaching full completion in 2007. The dam is a massive gravity structure that creates a sizeable reservoir, which is also utilized for local fishing and irrigation in the relatively dry Malanje Province. Capanda was the inaugural project in a wide-ranging strategy to harness the Kwanza River's immense hydraulic potential to achieve national energy independence.
