Cangandala Reserve (Angola)

Weather…

The Cangandala Reserve in Malanje Province is the smallest national park area in Angola and is world-famous for protecting the Giant Sable Antelope. The protected area was founded in 1963 and elevated to national park status in 1970 to save this rare subspecies, which is considered the national symbol of Angola. The reserve covers 630 square kilometers on an undulating plateau between the Cuije and Kwanza Rivers. The vegetation primarily consists of open Miombo woodland and grass savannas, providing handy grazing grounds for the antelopes. During the civil war, the fate of the Giant Sable Antelope was uncertain until a 2005 expedition confirmed its continued existence in Cangandala. Today, the park is the center of intensive conservation efforts, including video surveillance and breeding programs in protected enclosures. The geographical structure is characterized by gentle hills and numerous watercourses that support rich biodiversity. The park plays a crucial role in Angola's identity and the promotion of its ecological heritage.
