Mupa Special Reserve (Angola)

Weather…

The Mupa Special Reserve is located in the Cunene Province of southern Angola and was officially established on December 26, 1964. It covers an area of approximately 6,600 square kilometers and was originally created to protect the Angolan giraffe population, which is native to this arid region. The landscape is characterized by vast savannas, dense mopane woodlands, and the seasonal watercourses of the Cuvelai Basin. Despite significant degradation caused by the long civil war, the reserve remains an important refuge for various mammal species, including lions, leopards, and various types of antelope. During the dry season, the area serves as a critical corridor for migratory wildlife in search of remaining water sources. Current management is working towards restoring infrastructure and strengthening the protection of threatened fauna against poaching.
