Cumbira (Angola)

Weather…

Monte Cumbira is a prominent height in Angola's Cuanza Sul Province, renowned for its immense biological significance and complex forest ecosystems. Standing at an altitude of approximately 1600 meters, it rises above the surrounding hilly landscape of the Conda municipality. Geologically, the mountain is part of the marginal escarpment of the Angolan plateau and consists primarily of crystalline rocks. What makes Monte Cumbira truly special are the remnants of Afromontane cloud forest on its slopes, regarded as one of West Africa's most vital hotspots for endemic species. It is home to rare bird species like the Angola Cave Chat, which occurs nowhere else in the world. Climatically, the mountain intercepts moist air masses from the Atlantic, resulting in high rainfall and persistent fog. Historically, the area was used for coffee cultivation, but today conservation is the priority to prevent the loss of original forests to logging. Monte Cumbira is a key destination for ecotourism and scientific research in Angola.
