Porto Amboim is a significant port city located in the Cuanza Sul province on Angola's Atlantic coast. The city was originally founded as Benguela Velha but received its current name in 1923 in honor of the local Amboim highlands. Historically, the location was of vital importance for coffee exports, serving as the terminus for the isolated Porto Amboim, Gabela narrow-gauge railway that connected inland plantations to the ocean. Its geographical position in a natural bay provided shelter for commercial shipping and facilitated industrial development, particularly in fish processing and shipbuilding. Today, the city plays a central role in Angola's offshore oil industry, hosting large shipyards and logistics bases for the maintenance of deep-water oil platforms. The modernized port facilities continue to be a primary driver of the region's economic development and maritime infrastructure.
