Cambambe Dam (Angola)

Weather…

The Cambambe Dam, located on the Kwanza River in Cuanza Norte Province near the town of Dondo, is one of Angola's oldest yet most modernized hydroelectric facilities. Originally constructed during the Portuguese colonial era in the 1960s, the plant underwent a total renovation and massive expansion following independence and the end of the civil war. By raising the height of the dam and building a second powerhouse, its capacity was boosted to 960 megawatts. Cambambe is of critical strategic importance due to its proximity to the major consumption centers in the country's northwest. The structure itself is a striking arch dam that blends seamlessly into the rugged, rocky terrain. Beyond power generation, it serves as a monument to Angolan engineering and the long history of harnessing the Kwanza River's energy. Its modernization was completed with the support of international funding and technical expertise.
