Rozafa Castle (Albania)

Weather…

Rozafa Castle rises on a 130-meter-high rocky hill near the city of Shkodra, overseeing the confluence of the Buna, Drin, and Kiri rivers. Its history spans over two millennia, originating as an Illyrian stronghold for the Labeates and Ardiaei tribes before the Roman conquest in 167 BC. The fortress underwent extensive modifications under Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman rule, resulting in a complex architectural heritage. It is famously associated with the legend of Rozafa, a woman reportedly immured in the walls as a sacrifice to ensure the structure's stability. The expansive site consists of three defensive courtyards containing ruins of various periods, including St. Stephen's Church, which was later converted into the Fatih Mosque. Rozafa played a crucial role during the 1478-1479 Ottoman siege and remained a military post until 1913. Today, it serves as a major historical landmark offering panoramic views of Lake Skadar and the surrounding landscape.
