Lake Skadar (Albania)

Weather…

Lake Skadar is the largest lake in the Balkan Peninsula, straddling the border between Albania and Montenegro. Its surface area fluctuates seasonally between 370 and 530 square kilometers, with the majority of its inflow coming from the Morača River. Designated as a Ramsar site of international importance in 1996, the lake is a vital ecological sanctuary and one of Europe's top bird-watching destinations. It provides a habitat for over 270 bird species, including one of the last remaining colonies of the Dalmatian Pelican. The lake's average depth is relatively shallow at 5 to 10 meters, though underwater karst springs, known locally as 'eyes,' can exceed depths of 40 meters. Economically, the lake has been a cornerstone for local fishing communities for centuries, famous for its carp and bleak. The Albanian shoreline near the city of Shkodra features scenic villages like Shiroka and historic sites such as Rozafa Castle, offering a blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage.
