Brocken, 1141 metre yüksekliği ile Harz bölgesinin ve Sachsen-Anhalt eyaletinin en yüksek noktasıdır. Özellikle sık sık sisli olan ve şiddetli fırtınalara maruz kalan marjinal konumu ile tanınır. Alman edebiyatında dağ, özellikle Goethe'nin Walpurgisnacht'ın (Cadılar Gecesi) geçtiği yer olarak kurguladığı Faust eseri sayesinde 'Blocksberg' adıyla ün kazanmıştır. Almanya'nın bölünmüş olduğu dönemde Brocken askeri yasak bölgeydi ve Sovyet ile Doğu Almanya (DDR) gizli servisleri için önemli bir dinleme karakolu olarak hizmet veriyordu. Bugün zirve, Nationalpark Harz'ın bir parçasıdır ve yürüyüşçüler ile turistler için popüler bir hedeftir. Harzer Schmalspurbahnen, ziyaretçileri tarihi buharlı lokomotiflerle doğrudan Brocken platosuna taşır. Gastronomi tesislerinin yanı sıra burada bir botanik Alp bahçesi ve dağın tarihi ile doğası üzerine sergilerin bulunduğu Brockenhaus yer almaktadır.

Ulaşım

The highest peak in Northern Germany can be reached on foot via several well-signposted hiking trails originating from the surrounding valleys. Alternatively, the historic narrow-gauge steam railway transports visitors directly up to the summit plateau in a nostalgic manner.

The summit climate is famous for extremely rapid weather changes, dense fog, and severe storms occurring in absolutely any season. While summer often provides clear days for sweeping views, the mountain is deeply snow-covered in winter and highly popular with winter hikers.

Hiking trails to the summit range from well-maintained, wide forestry roads to steep, rocky paths such as the famous Heinrich Heine Way. The treeless summit plateau itself is largely flat, but it is very frequently exposed to fiercely strong and entirely unprotected winds.

Ekipman

Weatherproof clothing worn in layers is absolutely mandatory here due to the notoriously harsh and deeply unpredictable microclimate at the summit. Robust hiking boots, sufficient food, and in winter, ice cleats or snowshoes, are considered standard and essential equipment.

Hikers generally utilize the large, paid parking lots located in the surrounding valley towns, from which the various ascent routes originate. Additionally, there are usually ample parking spaces available for day guests near the stations of the narrow-gauge steam railway.

Hikers must always take the daily weather forecast very seriously, as rapid temperature drops and loss of orientation in thick fog represent genuine dangers. During winter, extreme caution is required regarding deep snowdrifts and icy patches on the ascent routes to the peak.

A full hike from the valley towns to the summit and back generally requires a complete, rather strenuous, full-day excursion. Visitors who opt for the comfortable, scenic train journey should typically plan for about one to two hours to explore the summit plateau area.
