Berchtesgaden Ulusal Parkı'nın devasa dağ dünyasına gömülmüş olan Königssee, Almanya'nın en temiz ve en muhteşem göllerinden biri kabul edilir. Yaklaşık 190 metrelik maksimum derinliği ile Bavyera'nın en derin gölüdür ve aralarında meşhur Watzmann Doğu Duvarı'nın da bulunduğu sarp kayalıklarla çevrili zümrüt yeşili suyuyla büyüler. Gölün bir özelliği, buzul çağındaki hareketlerle şekillenen fiyort benzeri karakteridir. Hirschau yarımadasında, yalnızca tekneyle veya zorlu yürüyüş yollarıyla ulaşılabilen barok tarzdaki St. Bartholomä hac kilisesi bulunur. Dağ gölünün hassas ekolojisini korumak amacıyla, 1909 yılından bu yana Königssee'deki gemi taşımacılığı yalnızca gürültüsüz elektrikli motorlarla yapılmaktadır. Geleneksel olarak bir trompetle (Flügelhorn) gösterilen meşhur eko, her tekne yolculuğunun ayrılmaz bir parçasıdır ve dünyanın her yerinden gelen ziyaretçileri büyülemektedir.
