Luanshya is situated in the heart of Zambia's Copperbelt Province and was founded in 1902 following the discovery of copper by prospector William Collier. The town quickly evolved into a premier mining hub, with the Roan Antelope and Antelope mines serving as the primary drivers of its economic growth for many decades. By the 1950s, Luanshya was renowned as one of the most developed urban centers in the region, boasting modern infrastructure and comprehensive social services for its mining community. Geographically, the city sits on a high plateau at an average elevation of 1,200 meters above sea level, enjoying a relatively mild climate. Today, Luanshya is navigating a period of economic transition, seeking to diversify its industrial base as traditional copper reserves face depletion. Culturally, the city is a spirited mosaic of various Zambian ethnic groups who migrated there in search of employment. The downtown area still exhibits the structured layout characteristic of colonial-era urban planning. Additionally, the city is an educational center, home to the Technical-Vocational Teachers' College and other training institutes.
