Kawimbe Mission (Zambia)

Weather…

Kawimbe Mission, founded in 1887 near Mbala in the Northern Province, was the first station established by the London Missionary Society in Zambia. It played a critical role in the early spread of Christianity and Western education among the Mambwe and Lungu peoples of the region. The mission is historically significant for introducing new agricultural techniques, including the first use of an ox-drawn plough in the territory. During World War I, Kawimbe's proximity to the border with German East Africa made it a strategic location during the East African campaign. The mission complex includes historical stone buildings that reflect the durable construction methods of the late 19th century. Today, it stands as a memorial to the early missionary pioneers and the profound social transformations they initiated in northern Zambia.
