Historically, the area has been the ancestral home of the White Thai ethnic group, renowned for their traditional stilt houses and intricate weaving skills. The architecture of these dwellings, typically raised 1.5 to 2 meters above the ground, provides protection against dampness and wildlife. Since the 1990s, Mai Chau has evolved into a prime example of community-based tourism, with villages like Lac and Poom Coong serving as primary hubs.
