Pigna Courtyard (Vatican)

Weather…

The Pigna Courtyard (Cortile della Pigna), or Pinecone Courtyard, is a prominent open space within the Vatican Museums complex, named after a colossal ancient bronze pinecone. Standing over four meters tall, the sculpture dates back to the 1st or 2nd century and originally stood near the Pantheon before being moved to the atrium of the Old St. Peter's Basilica and finally here in the 17th century. The pinecone is flanked by two bronze peacocks, which are replicas of 2nd-century originals from Hadrian's Mausoleum. Architecturally, the courtyard represents the northernmost part of Bramante's massive Belvedere project, capped by a grand semicircular niche designed by Pirro Ligorio. In the center of the courtyard stands Arnaldo Pomodoro's 1990 modern masterpiece, 'Sfera con Sfera' (Sphere within a Sphere), symbolizing the complexity and fragility of the world. This juxtaposition of ancient artifacts, Renaissance architecture, and contemporary sculpture makes the Pigna Courtyard one of the most culturally significant and frequently visited spots in the Vatican.
